Angel investments in startup companies made a comeback in 2010 after two years of contractions, according to a report from the Center for Venture Research at the University of New Hampshire.
Total angel investments were $20.1 billion, an increase of 14 percent over the 2009 total. In all, nearly 62,000 startups received angel funding in 2010, an increase of 8.2 percent over the prior year. The number of active investors also increased by 2.3 percent.
Entrepreneurial firms in the health care services/medical devices and equipment sectors led for the year, capturing a 30-percent share of the angel investment market. The other top sectors included software, biotech, industrial/energy, retail and IT services.
