AMSC, a Devens-based wind and power grid company, will connect South Africa’s largest wind farm to the electricity grid under a new contract with high-voltage construction company Consolidated Power Projects (CONCO), based in that country.
“We selected AMSC as the grid interconnection solution provider because of its proven ability to meet even the most stringent of grid codes and keep wind farms online, thereby increasing output and revenues,” Rein Dijkstra, business unit manager for CONCO, said in a statement.
AMSC said it will employ its D-VAR STATCOM solution, which is designed to stabilize the power grid and prevent problems like a voltage collapse, to carry out the connection. The system will be commissioned in the first half of 2014, according to AMSC.
It’s the company’s first D-VAR STATCOM sale to a South African company, but the system is already used by more than 20 power grid operators worldwide, according to AMSC.
