AMSC To Stabilize Long Island Power Grid

American Superconductor Corp. of Devens said it has received a large-scale order from National Grid for Long Island's electricity network.

National Grid runs the network with the Long Island Power Authority. The order is for the installation of AMSC's D-VAR equipment on Eastern Long Island. The system stabilizes voltage, relieves power grid congestion, improves efficiency and prevents blackouts.

The power authority said use of its grid is increasing every year and it needed a way to stabilize voltage during times of peak demand, especially in the summer when Long Island's population surges. The D-VAR system is the second AMSC has sold to the Long Island Power Authority.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
