AMSC To Design Chinese Wind Turbines

Devens-based American Superconductor Corp. has signed a deal to co-develop wind turbines for Chinese state-owned industrial equipment manufacturing giant Shenyang Blower Works Co. Ltd.

AMSC Windtec, a subsidiary of American Superconductor, will supply SBW with designs for the 2 megawatt turbines, will help SBW procure all of the core components of the turbines, establish SBW's turbine manufacturing line and build and test SBW's prototype turbines.

The company said SBW will build and manufacture the turbines primarily for the Chinese market. Its first prototypes are expected to be operational next year and the company expects full-scale production to begin in 2010.

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
