American Superconductor Corp., the Devens-based manufacturer of wind turbine parts, has entered an agreement with a South Korean company to build large-scale, 5-megawatt wind turbines designed for offshore use.
AMSC’s wholly owned Wintec subsidiary will jointly develop the design for the 5-megawatt turbine along with Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd of South Korea. Production is expected to begin by the end of 2011.
AMSC already has agreements with HHI to build 1.65- and 2-megawatt turbines. The 1.65-megawatt versions have already begun production and the 2 megawatt turbines are set to begin production this year.
