AMSC Ships Grid System To China
Devens-based AMSC, formerly American Superconductor, said it has received an order for its D-VAR system from a company helping Chinese utility providers improve power quality.
Grid interconnection products were a $32-million business in 2012 for AMSC, which is perhaps better known for its wind turbine electrical components.
Interconnecting renewable power sources to electricity grids presents a challenge because of the intermittent nature of the solar and wind systems. That can lead to voltage stability problems between the transmission system and the power plant, according to AMSC.
AMSC has now shipped three D-VAR Statcom systems to Australia-based Xiamen Red Phase Instruments, which is working with China Southern Power Grid to better regulate voltage to improve power quality. AMSC said it has sold more than 100 Statcom systems worldwide to more than 20 grid operators.
