AMSC Expands Korea Cable Effort

American Superconductor Corp. has expanded its alliance with LS Cable of Korea.

Under the new agreement the two cable manufacturers will collaborate on a project to install more than 50 kilometers of superconductor power cable in commercial power grids over the next five years.

The original agreement between Devens-based AMSC and LS Cable called for the installation of 10 kilometers of cable.

Superconductor cables can carry more power than conventional cables and they can be used in power grids to relieve overtaxed conventional cables and overhead lines.

The South Korean government said last year that it intends to convert the country's entire electrical network to so-called "smart grid" technology.
