American Superconductor Corp. has formed AMSC India as that country makes efforts to improve its power grid and promote alternative energy.
AMSC, which is based in Devens, will have two offices in India: a regional head office in Delhi and an engineering, sales and business development office in Pune.
India has been installing wind farms at a fast pace and making improvements to its existing grid but about 40 percent of its population is still without power, AMSC said. The Indian government has launched an effort to bring electricity to all the country's residents by 2012.
AMSC will provide local technical support for those efforts and "build a strong foundation for future sales" in the country. The company already has two Indian wind turbine manufacturers licensed to use AMSC Windtec turbine designs.
