AMSC: China Court To Hear Copyright Cases

China’s highest court next week will hear Devens-based AMSC‘s software copyright infringement cases against two Chinese firms, one of which allegedly refused to pay for products it had ordered from the maker of products for wind energy and the electric grid.

AMSC, formerly American Superconductor, said China’s Supreme People’s Court has scheduled a hearing for next Wednesday to review the jurisdiction of AMSC’s civil actions against the two firms: Sinovel Wind Group and Guotong Electric.

In September 2011, AMSC also filed a copyright case against Sinovel and Guotong Electric with a court in the Chinese province of Hainan. In this case, AMSC is seeking a cease and desist order as well as damages totaling approximately $200,000, making this the smallest of AMSC’s four legal actions against Sinovel.

In the second half of 2011, then-American Superconductor lost nearly all its revenue from Sinovel after the company refused to pay for products it had ordered. AMSC believes Sinovel breached a contract with the company.
