The Northeast Microelectronics Coalition Hub, a division of the Westborough-based Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, has named Mark Halfman as hub director, leading the hub’s strategy and execution initiatives.
The NEMC Hub is an initiative of the nearly $280 billion CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, signed into law by President Biden in August 2022.
Halfman comes to the role having worked in the commercialization of advanced technologies industry for more than two decades, with experience in taking technologies from the research-and-development prototype phase to commercial fabrication, according to a Tuesday release from the NEMC Hub.
“MassTech is proud to welcome Mark and looks forward to his proposals of the region’s lab-to-fab strategy,” Carolyn Kirk, CEO of MassTech, said in the release. “Mark has the dedicated experience and technical know-how to critically understand the requirements needed for our hub to build a thriving semiconductor ecosystem in the Northeast. His work is critically important to realizing the positive impact the hub represents for economic opportunity in Massachusetts and the region.”
Previously, Halfman held positions at public semiconductor companies, including Qualcomm of San Diego and Xilinx of San Jose, as well as a number of startups that have gone on to be acquired.
Halfman earned his bachelor’s in applied mathematics from University of California, San Diego, and his master’s degree from the Indiana University Kelley School of Business.
Halfman replaces acting director Ben Linville-Engler, who will continue in his role as deputy director and chief investment strategist of MassTech.
The NEMC Hub, founded in 2023, is a nexus of more than 170 organizations aiming to provide sustainable lab-to-fab enablement, promote education and workplace development, and promote job creation, according to the release.
