Amid Job Cuts, Harvard Pilgrim Again Ranked No. 1

On the same day that it was ranked the top private health plan in the U.S. for the 10th straight year, non-profit insurer Harvard Pilgrim Health Care on Thursday disclosed that it has reduced its workforce by 65.

The National Committee for Quality Assurance placed the Wellesley-based insurer atop its rankings of nearly 500 health plans, with its New Hampshire affiliate placing ninth in the nation. The rankings are based on clinical quality measurements, consumer assessments and accreditation standards.

“We could not have achieved the honor of achieving the top seat for a full decade without strong partnerships with our doctors, hospitals, employers, brokers and, of course, our employees,” Eric Schultz, president and CEO of Harvard Pilgrim, said in a statement. “We are committed to remaining focused on bringing all of the communities we serve the best care, quality and value possible.”

Harvard Pilgrim serves 1.2 million members in New England. In touting its ranking, the company made no mention of its workforce-reduction plans but company officials confirmed that it had cut its workforce by 65 positions “as part of a strategic plan to align its organizational structure with the changing health care environment.”

In a statement about the job cuts, Schultz said, “Functioning as efficiently as possible is our commitment to our members and the communities we serve, and something that is expected of all of us in the health care industry.

“Our focus on creating value for our customers and network providers will enable us to continue to achieve long-term success and function optimally in this evolving marketplace,” he added. “Job reductions are difficult for the people affected, especially in our company, where we have a strong culture of caring for those we serve externally as well as for one another internally.”

Schultz said Harvard Pilgrim is providing severance and support services to affected employees.

HPHC, which has an office in downtown Worcester, serves Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine and plans to expand into Connecticut in 2014.
