American Superconductor wins Korean tech order

Westboro-based American Superconductor (AMSC) received an order from the Korean Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) for first generation high temperature superconductor wire.

KERI, a South Korea-based government sponsored research institute, will use 22,000 meters of 1G wire to launch a 10-year project to create superconductor magnetic energy storage systems.  AMSC developed the product jointly with KERI to meet the the organization's need for a four-ply superconductor with high electrical performance. The wire will be used to store and release megawatts of power, helpful in the stabililzation of power grids.

The company expects to receive orders for most of its remaining 1G inventory by December of 2007.  AMSC stopped manufacturing 1G HTS wire as of June 30, 2006.
