American Superconductor (AMSC) in Westboro announced the signing of an agreement with Shanghai Electric Cable Research Institute (SECRI), one of two centers that test and certify power cables for China.
The terms of the business alliance call for AMSC to be the preferred supplier of high temperature superconductor (HTS) wire to SECRI and the recommended preferred HTS wire supplier to its cable manufacturing licensees for all future superconductor cables. SECRI will also help raise awareness of AMSC's D-VAR power grid solutions to decision makers throughout China.
Plans include for SECRI to develop and certify HTS power cable systems for use by its constituent members which include power cable manufacturers throughout China. SECRI will manufacture and test a prototype HTS power cable using AMSC's HTS wire, and later plans call for the installation of HTS cables in the powergrid, likely to be in Shanghai.
