Framingham-based Ameresco Inc. announced today that it had completed the installation of a biogas energy recovery facility for the city of Dallas, Texas.
The 4.3-megawatt biogas capture and refining facility will generate electricity and thermal load to power Dallas Water Utilities’ facilities.
The facility will capture methane created during the sewage treatment process and use it to power equipment. The DWU plant is among the first in the country built for wastewater methane capture, according to the company. The systems are more common at landfills, but most wastewater operations burn off excess methane using flares.
Amerseco’s facility is expected save the city of Dallas $1.5 million per year and will save 60 percent of the amount of electricity DWU typically pulls from the grid each year.
