Framingham energy services firm Ameresco has been selected to design, engineer, operate and maintain a natural gas-fired peaking plant at Philadelphia’s Navy Yard that will serve as the centerpiece of one of America’s largest private microgrids.
Ameresco has partnered with PIDC, the private-public economic development corporation for the city of Philadelphia, to create and service the new natural gas plant at Philadelphia’s Navy Yard, Ameresco announced Monday. The plant, which PIDC said is estimated to cost about $11 million, will run during peak demand periods, allowing PIDC to meet projected demand growth needs for the 1,200-acre Navy Yard and its tenants.
The plant will allow PIDC to generate revenue to offset the cost of the increased capacity, according to Ameresco, and in the event of an extended grid outages, will provide resiliency services and critical support, said Michael Bakas, senior vice president at Ameresco.
It will also shave the microgrid’s peak load requirements, said Bakas.
