Framingham renewable energy company Ameresco announced Thursday a partnership with Wales-based Merthyr Tydfil Council, resulting in a $1.45-million energy conservation project.
The Merthyr Tydfil Council, representing its namesake town, is implementing a strategic plan to transform the city into a modern commercial hub, according to the release.
Through the partnership, Amereso will redesign 31 sites throughout Merthyr Tydfil, upgrade the city’s aging infrastructure, install nine solar systems and 30 LED lighting upgrades, and implement smart heating and hot water systems, per the announcement.
Once completed, the project is estimated to save the city $181,000 per year and reduce carbon emissions from buildings by 251 tons annually.
The conservation project will help the council achieve its goal of reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2030, as outlined by the Welsh government.
“Through our partnership, we hope to not only cut energy costs, but improve the comfort levels for town staff and building users,” said Britta MacIntosh, senior vice president of Ameresco.
Construction is expected to be completed in March.
