Framingham-based renewable energy company Ameresco is partnering with Ontario Power Generation subsidiary Atura Power to develop a 250-megawatt, 1,000-megawatt hour battery energy storage system to power Ontario, Canada’s electricity grid.
The building of the energy system is being commissioned by the Independent Electricity System Operator in Toronto, according to a Thursday press release from Ameresco.
The joint venture, called the Napanee Battery Energy Storage System Project, is a 20-year capacity agreement. Ameresco is a 10.1% minority partner in Napanee BESS, the official name for the venture.
The result of the project will be a resilient electricity grid in Ontario, according to the Napanee BESS project’s website. It intends to address an anticipated energy supply shortfall in Ontario.
“In partnership with Atura Power, we are honored that our JV has been selected by the IESO for this battery energy storage system installation, one of the largest in Canadian history. This project is designed to significantly bolster the province’s energy security and reliability, ushering Canada into a greener, more sustainable age,” Louis Maltezos, executive vice president of Ameresco, said in the release.
