Town officials in Framingham didn’t have to look far to select a company to help make municipal buildings more energy efficient.
Framingham-based energy services firm Ameresco and the town have signed a $6 million contract to improve energy use in 32 town-owned buildings, wring out operational cost savings and reduce greenhouse gases and emissions, according to a statement from Ameresco, released Friday.
The town expects to save about $380,000 a year after the work is completed, according to Town Manager Robert Halpin.
“This comprehensive project reflects Framingham's commitment to energy conservation, including reducing our operating costs and achieving our sustainability goals,” Halpin said in the Ameresco statement. He said the contract will allow the town to replace “aging infrastructure, upgrade our buildings, and make improvements, all without burdening our taxpayers with additional capital costs.”
Ameresco said the environmental benefits from this project include the reduction of more than 3.3 million pounds of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to eliminating 277 passenger vehicles from the road annually.
