Framingham energy services firm Ameresco, Inc. has signed a $91.1 million contract with the U.S. Marine Corps to create a microgrid at the recruit depot on Parris Island, S.C.

The microgrid, which can provide all the power the 8,095-acre military installation needs, will be powered by a 3.5-megawatt natural gas power plant that can recover the waste heat to provide heating and cooling for the facility, according to the deal announced Thursday.

The energy savings performance contract is supposed to be cost-neutral for the military and will also include energy and water efficiency upgrades at 121 buildings.

The contract is expected to reduce Parris Island’s utility electricity demand by 79 percent and its water consumption by 27 percent.
