Framingham-based green energy company Ameresco has completed work on an energy and retrofitting project at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston.

The project is expected to save the school about $436,385 per year in energy costs, according to a Wednesday press release from Ameresco. The project was a collaboration effort between MassArt, Ameresco, and the state's Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance and Department of Energy Resources, according to MassArt’s climate action and sustainability plan.

Services provided by Ameresco included improved lighting controls, building management system and controls upgrades, steam heating improvements, make-up air units and exhaust fans installations, and general building code upgrades. According to MassArt’s sustainability plan, the project is estimated to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to the school by 25%. Construction covered approximately 800,000 square feet across university facilities.

“One of the amazing things about working with customers in the higher education space is seeing how they can improve their learning environments from the cost savings that come from clean energy improvements,” said Pete Christakis, Ameresco senior vice president of construction and operations, in the press release. “We have been coordinating this project with MassArt since 2018. This is a very important step for the university’s future sustainability goals, and we are happy to help to lead the charge.”

In addition to MassArt, the company has ongoing relationships with other universities in the Boston area, such as Wellesley College and Northeastern University.
