Framingham renewable and energy efficiency firm Ameresco has completed a 2.5-megawatt solar energy system near the U.S.-Mexico border to help power a U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency facility.

The system at the DEA’s Intelligence Center at Fort Bliss In El Paso, Texas is the agency’s first and includes more than 7,340 solar panels installed over more than 9,000 hours of construction.

Solar energy will reduce the facility’s electricity costs by at least $9.2 million over 20 years and will help reduce carbon emissions by more than 3,400 metric tons per year, Ameresco said in a press release Thursday.

The company will own and operate the system for 20 years, per the agreement reached nearly a year ago in September 2017 through the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Savings Performance Contract.

Also part of the project was the conversion of more than 1,400 interior and exterior lighting fixtures to high-efficiency LED lights.
