Ameresco chosen for DEA solar in Texas

Framingham solar energy firm Ameresco will build a 2.47-megawatt solar energy system at the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s El Paso, Texas, base, the agency’s first renewable energy system.
Ameresco announced Monday it entered into a contract with the agency. It was awarded the contract under the Energy Saving Performance Contract program in September after being selected in February.
The system will include two ground-mounted solar systems on the site of the DEA’s El Paso Intelligence Center. The project will result in reduced energy costs, long-term electric pricing stability and reduced carbon emissions of more than 3,400 metric tons annually, according to Ameresco.
The contract with Ameresco is structured to capture the financial benefits of solar investment tax credits through an energy sales agreement. Ameresco will finance, build, own and operate the system for 20 years, per the contract.
Over that time, the system is expected to reduce energy costs by $9.2 million, Ameresco said.
The company will convert more than 1,400 lighting fixtures to high-efficiency LED fixtures.
The project is currently under construction and is expected to be operational by fall 2018.
