Amazon is moving forward with a plan for a prospective distribution center and warehouse in Charlton, which the company estimates will include a $300-million investment and produce at least 1,000 new jobs, developers and Brad Griggs, senior manager for economic development at the online retailer, told selectmen Tuesday night.
The Charlton Board of Selectmen, who hosted a special meeting for a project introduction, did not know until the meeting the proposed tenant for the facility at 52 Sturbridge Road was Amazon.
The project is being developed by Bluewater Property Group of Pennsylvania and New York, as well as Bay Colony Properties of Waltham.
If all goes forward as planned, Amazon plans to commence construction in March.
The prototype for the facility includes a 634,000-square-foot footprint and a multilevel warehouse, including about 10,000-square-feet of office space.
Of the 1,000 projected new full-time jobs, roughly 100 of them will be managerial with starting salaries beginning at $60,000 per year. The remaining 900 jobs will be hourly, starting at $15 an hour. All jobs will have full benefits.
The property, bound by Route 20 and Route 169, is owned by the Kaszowski Family Realty Trust of Charlton. The property was assessed by the Town of Charlton at $341,332 in 2021.
The property as it stands is 63 acres, and was last sold for $100 in 1999.
