Altruist latest craft brewer to begin canning beer

Bob and Nancy Bixby, co-founders of Altruist Brewing Company in Sturbridge, are opening a brewery and taproom in the fall.

Altruist Brewing Co. of Sturbridge will be the latest Central Massachusetts small brewer to begin making beer in cans, a milestone for getting beer in the hands of more drinkers.

"Since we started the planning of Altruist Brewing Co., we dreamt of cans bearing our logo and being filled with the fruits of our passion," Altruist said in an Instagram post last weekend. "We saw cans as an important part of our future because it allows you to more easily take the beer that you love on the go and share with friends. We are honored to begin providing you with cans of Altruist brews."

Altruist, located in a converted mill building at 559 Main St., will begin selling its flagship New England IPA, Johnny Fry, for sale only in its taproom. Due to supply and demand limits, cans may be limited in quantity, the brewer said. It didn't offer an exact timeline for sales to begin.

The growing craft brewing market has brought more small brewers in Central Massachusetts and beyond to begin selling its beer in cans. Flying Dreams Brewing Co. in Worcester began doing so late last year, and Moon Hill Brewing did in 2017.

Others are expanding their existing production facilities. Medusa Brewing in Hudson is planning a $5.5-million canning facility, and Wachusett Brewing in Westminster said last year it is planning an expansion that would double its production capacity.
