Already low unemployment rates in Greater Worcester, Leominster drop further

Photo | WBJ File The unemployment rate in Massachusetts continues to be below national levels.

The Worcester metropolitan statistical area’s seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate dropped to 3.2% in October from 3.3% in September, while the Leominster-Gardner area also dropped a tenth of a percentage point to 3.5% over the month.

The Framingham area stayed the same at 2.5%, according to the jobs report released Tuesday by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.

The statewide seasonally unadjusted unemployment dropped 0.1% from September to 3.0% in October, according to Tuesday’s report.

Compared to last year, the state’s unemployment rate has decreased by 1.6% since October 2021. The statewide seasonally adjusted preliminary jobs estimate showed an increase of 9,800 jobs in October, and an over-the-year gain of 141,300 jobs.

Worcester's unemployment rate saw a drop of 1.5% from last year, and the Leominster-Gardner Metropolitan statistical area has seen an even bigger decrease of 1.7% in the same time period. Framingham dropped by 1.2% over that time period.

Those numbers are specific to unadjusted unemployment rates, which fluctuates with the season and differs from the seasonally adjusted estimates. On Friday, the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development reported the statewide seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in the month of October 2022 was 3.5%, up a percentage point from the revised September 2022 estimate of 3.4% and lower than the national rate of 3.7% reported by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.
