Allegro Microsystems explored 20 Central Mass. sites for relocation

Allegro Microsystems is leaving Worcester after 53 years of operating its headquarters at 115 Northeast Cutoff. The company is relocating to a Marlborough building by the end of the summer. In a recent interview, the executive staff at the company told the WBJ why.

Ultimately, why did the company choose to relocate to Marlborough?

Our search committee evaluated multiple MetroWest sites and the Marlborough site was the best fit for location, space and amenities.

Did the commercial/business tax rate in Worcester play a factor?

No.

What appeals to the company about Marlborough?

We chose the Marlborough facility to provide our employees with a contemporary atmosphere that will foster a collaborative environment between our R&D, quality, finance and operations groups 

Was staying in the Central Mass. area a priority?

Yes, to retain the existing Massachusetts employee base as well as attract new prospective workforce.

How many other locations did the company look at? Can you tell us where those were?

Allegro looked at approximately 20 different locations in Worcester, Marlborough, Westborough, Southborough and Shrewsbury.

How long has Allegro been exploring such a move?

About two years.

How did the company grow while in the city?

Allegro occupied the Worcester facility for more than fifty years. Allegro experienced significant growth while we were headquartered in Worcester and operated a wafer (fabrication facility) during that period.

How do you expect the company to grow in Marlborough?

Our new office location in Marlborough will be a critical part of our future growth supporting our research and development, quality and administrative functions.
