Air Force to use Optos retinal scanner

Optos, a medical device company specializing in devices that image the retina, announced that the U.S. Air Force is now using the company's Ultrawide-field Panaoramic200 Scanning Laser Opthalmoscope at bases around the country.

The device is used to produce a high-resolution image of the retina in a single image capture.  In a quarter of second, the P200 can scan up to 200 degrees of the retina.   Air Force bases in Ohio, Florida, Arizona, California, and Arkansas are using the P200.

Hurlburt Air Force Base in Florida has confirmed that aircrew members aren't DNFIEd (Duty Not to Include Flying) after receiving the scan, indicating that operational abilities are not impaired after the examination.  An estimated 60,000 man-hours are saved from lost-duty time because of the exam.

"We look forward to helping the U.S. Air Force integrate the optomap Retinal Exam into its health screening regime for its U.S. Air Force personnel," said Tom Butts, CEO of Optos plc.
