Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, in the company of 11 other states, has sued the Environmental Protection Agency in an effort to stop the revision of the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) program. The suit aims to halt new regulations that reduce the reporting requirements of the 20-year old program, which necessitates that companies disclose the amounts of toxic chemicals released into the environment. The proposed EPA changes call for companies to report a release of chemicals over 5,000 pounds, ten times higher than the current threshold. If the new regulations are adopted, companies would no longer be required to report the release of lead and mercury.
