AG strengthens protection for whistleblowers

Attorney General Richard Blumenthal is proposing new legislation that would give more protection to whistleblowers, to which he said he owes many "significant investigations into public corruption."

The legislation, which is backed by state Sens. Edith G. Prague, D-Columbia, and Gayle S. Slossberg, D-Milford, looks to extend to three years the time period during which a whistleblower may claim an adverse personnel action is retaliation. It will also authorize Blumenthal's office to intervene on behalf of whistleblowers in an administrative hearing on retaliation.

The proposed legislation follows highly publicized presumed whistleblwer retaliation in the Department of Transportation and the state police, Blumenthal said. "[Whistleblowers] are messengers with bad news and evidence of wrongdoing who should be shielded from adverse action, not abandoned. Current protections are clearly inadequate, ridden with opportunities for revenge, subtle or direct," Blumenthal said in a statement.
