AG Looks To Aid Students Of Shuttered Career School

Attorney General Martha Coakley and the state's Division of Professional Licensure (DPL) are investigating the American Career Institute (ACI), which unexpectedly closed its five Massachusetts campuses – including one in Framingham – on Wednesday, her office announced.

Coakley is urging the estimated 1,400 Massachusetts ACI students to cancel any automatic payments to the school and save all related documents and paperwork. ACI is a for-profit occupational school that offered job training in database administration, allied health and digital media. It also has several campuses in Maryland.

Students told the MetroWest Daily News that teachers informed them just after noon on Wednesday that classes were canceled for the day and told them they had to leave the building.

A notice posted on the door said the school's lenders had declined to extend additional credit that ACI needed to continue operating, the newspaper said.

"Our office is working to protect students who find themselves in this circumstance with seemingly no advance warning," Coakley said. "We urge students to contact our office if they were harmed by this closure."

Students can call 617-727-8400. Coakley said her office is also taking calls from ACI employees at 617-727-3465.

Meanwhile, officials at DPL are trying to reach agreements with other occupational schools to take on ACI's students. The DPL said it is also evaluating options for tuition reimbursement and for allowing students to discharge their loans for uncompleted programs.
