AG Gets MA Businesses $135K

Attorney General Martha Coakley's Office has negotiated a settlement with a Boston insurer that will send $135,878 to 19 businesses in Massachusetts.

Two of the companies included in the settlement are Sycamore Networks of Chelmsford, which will get $26,797, and SeaChange International of Acton, which will receive $8,736.

The settlement stems from a 2007 suit against Boston insurance broker William Gallagher Associates, which is alleged to have deceived customers into purchasing insurance from The Chubb Corporation, a New Jersey-based insurance firm. Coakley alleges that Chubb and WGA created improper incentives between the companies to steer business to Chubb.

A total of 24 businesses will receive payments from Chubb as a result of the settlement worth $182,815. Most of the companies involved are in the life sciences or IT sectors.
