After years of vacancy, historic Olympia Theatre bought by local family for $527K

The historic Olympia Theatre on Pleasant Street in Worcester was bought by the Kahale family.
The historic Olympia Theatre on Pleasant Street in Worcester sold earlier this month to a local family who plans to rejuvenate the shuttered entertainment venue, according to a social media post from the nonprofit Preservation Worcester.
The property was sold to a corporation registered to Adisson and Kyle Kahale of Worcester, and Tammy Kahale of Sutton, for $527,400, per the Worcester County District Registry of Deeds.
The sale closed on Sept. 10.
In its post, Preservation Worcester said the Kahales are committed to returning the property to its original purpose as a performance venue.
Opened in the late 1800s as Lothrop’s Opera House, Olympia is the oldest surviving theater in Worcester, according to Preservation Worcester’s website. After being shuttered in 2006, however, it has remained vacant for years and was included on a demolition list for Worcester Redevelopment Authority’s Downtown Urban Revitalization Plan.
First Olympia Realty LLC, registered to Richard Rizzo of Framingham, purchased the property for $60,000 in 2007. In 2019, Spencer-based restaurant owners Patrick Flynn and Jennifer Wright launched an effort to revitalize the theater and hosted several small shows, but were unable to continue funding.
The four-story building is assessed by the City of Worcester at $555,000 and includes almost 25,000 square feet of space.
