The popularity of social and professional networking sites like MySpace and LinkedIn among young professionals is well documented, but a new survey suggests that hiring managers may value such sites as a job recruiting tool.

A Robert Half Finance & Accounting survey asked senior executives which technologies they thought would be most useful to hiring efforts in the next three years. Nearly two-thirds, 62 percent, said professional networking sites. Another 35 percent said social networking sites.

Half said the sites allow job seekers and hiring managers to remain in close contact, but warned that they shouldn’t take the place of well-written resumes, cover letters or diligently following up with hiring managers.
