Although a team of two students from Acton-Boxborough Regional High School did not win the $100,000 top prize, they did walk away from the 2008 Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology with a $30,000 scholarship.
Christine S. Lai and Dyang Tang, both seniors at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School won the Siemens regional competition, and the $6,000 scholarship that came with it, at MIT in November. Their project researched the process by which cells internalize materials. The research has many implications for the medical industry, including strategies to regulate cholesterol.
At the national competition in New York Monday, Lai and Dyang placed fourth, behind teams from North Carolina, New York and New Mexico.
The competition is sponsored by the Siemens Foundation and is administered by the College Board.
