ACT Enters Stem Cell Agreement

Advanced Cell Technology Inc. of Marlborough has reached an agreement with a Scottish company to establish new embryonic stem cell lines for research and clinical uses.

The joint effort between ACT and Roslin Cells of Scotland will use a proprietary technique that uses a single cell from an embryo without destroying the embryo. A similar method is currently used for genetic testing as part of some in vitro fertilization procedures.

The cell lines created through the partnership would use protocols that meet both European and U.S. FDA standards. Roslin Cells will maintain the cell lines, which will be available for both research and commercial purposes.

The companies said the cell lines will be suitable to move easily from laboratory to clinical programs.
