Central Massachusetts’ largest hospital, UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, has named its new chief of cardiac surgery, selecting a physician from England to fill the role.
Dr. James Barnard comes to UMMC’s Department of Surgery from Wythenshawe Hospital, an England-based institution that is part of the Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust system, according to a Friday press release from UMass Memorial Health.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Barnard to UMass Memorial Health,” Dr. Andrew Karson, UMass Memorial chief physician executive, said in the release. “His depth of expertise and commitment to advancing cardiac surgical care will be invaluable to patients across the region and our team as we continue to expand and enhance our cardiac surgery program.”
Barnard served as a consultant cardiac and cardiothoracic transplant surgeon at the hospital since 2013, according to Manchester University’s website. His special interests included coronary artery bypass graft surgery, aortic valve surgery, and heart and lung transplantation
Barnard replaces Dr. Karl Uy, said Kristy Lee, media and public relations manager at UMass Memorial, to WBJ.
Uy has held the chief of cardiac surgery on an interim basis since October 2020, according to his LinkedIn profile.
Barnard graduated from University of St Andrews in Scotland and The University of Manchester in England. The two universities have a partnership degree track, according to St Andrews’ website.
He pursued an advanced fellowship at the United Kingdom’s Royal Papworth Hospital as a national fellow in heart and lung transplantation.
With 826 licensed beds, UMMC is the largest hospital in Central Massachusetts when ranked by data collected by WBJ’s Research Department.
The medical center employs 9,024 individuals, including 3,227 registered nurses and 1,256 active physicians.
