Accountants' Duties Expanding

Within the next five years, senior accountants will dedicate more of their time to responsibilities outside of pure accounting than they do now, according to results of a recent Robert Half Management Resources survey.

The survey asked CFOs what percentage of a senior accountant's time five years from now will be focused on less traditional accounting functions, such as offering strategic advice or providing input for information technology projects.

Respondents said 40 percent of a senior accountant's time would be occupied by responsibilities other than accounting. That's up from a year ago when respondents to the same survey said accountants would spend about 36 percent of their time on non-accounting duties.

Robert Half, an international temporary staffing agency, said 26 percent of respondents said as much as half an accountant's time could be taken up by other tasks in five years.
