Accolades & Honors: Nov. 12

Madhavi Marathe, a math teacher at the Advanced Math and Science Academy charter school in Marlborough, recieved the MathMovesU Hero Award sponsored by Raytheon Co. Student Vera Guttenberger nominated her for the award. Marathe received $2,500 and a matching grant for the school's math program.

Central MA Mechanical of Shrewsbury was a first-place winner for its contributions to COOL SMART, a high-efficiency air-conditioning rebate program.

EcoTarium of Worcester was awarded a $48,920 national leadership grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. It will use the money to work on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) curricula, partnering with the Worcester Public Schools and Anna Maria College in Paxton.

Gardner-based GFA Federal Credit Union received its 82nd consecutive quarterly five-star rating by Bauer Financial. GFA has also been awarded the Sustained Superiority Award from Bauer.

Lori Corcoran, associate dean of special populations at Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester, earned a Community Bridging Award by Alternatives, a human services agency in Whitinsville.

Tom Meyers of Wachusett Mountain Ski Area in Princeton won an award for excellence from the Massachusetts Annual Governor's Conference on Travel and Tourism. Brimfield Antiques and Collectibles won in the Massachusetts Premier Tourism Attraction Award category.

Cristina Ballantine, Robert Bertin, Mary Conley and Mathew Schmalz won Arthur J. O'Leary Faculty Recognition Awards from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester. Ballantine is an associate professor of mathematics; Bertin is a biology professor; Conley is an associate professor of history and Schmalz is an associate professor of religious studies.

Izabela Stroe and Michael T. Abramson were awarded a Kalenian Award by Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Stroe is an assistant physics professor and Abramson is an alumnus and intellectual property attorney. Stroe was recognized for an early-detection device for Alzheimer's disease. Abramson was honored for a product that will identify so-called date-rape drugs. Both receive $12,500. WPI officials also recognized Kevin Harrington, who received $5,000 in in-kind legal services for development of a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education kit.

The Ambulatory Care Center at the University of Massachusetts Medical School's Worcester campus earned a green LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. The 253,000-square-foot center contains a mix of patient care, clinical research and educational activities.

Mauro DePasquale and Jennifer Picherri of WCCA TV-13 were nominated for Alliance of Community Media-North East Region awards. DePasquale is executive director and chief of operations; Picherri is consulting producer of NEWS 13 and a trainer in the station's digital media and technology learning program. DePasquale will be receiving the Chuck Sherwood Leadership Award; Picherri will be receiving the Brian Wilson Mentor Award.

Worcester-based Pagano Media won an International Davey Award from the International Academy for the Visual Arts for a website it designed. The website, for Building Excellent Schools, a charter school effort, incorporates videos and online recruiting tools.

Peter L. Ettenberg, of Worcester-based Gould & Ettenberg, has become a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He is a past president of the Worcester County Bar Association and a graduate of Suffolk University Law School in Boston.

Robin A. Duncan received the Communicator of the Year Award from District 1 of the National Council for Marketing & Public Relations. She is vice president of marketing and communications for Mount Wachusett Community College in Gardner.

Fred Smith of Active Logistics Inc. in Northborough won a Van Operator of the Month award from Mayflower Transit, based in St. Louis, Mo., for exceptional performance in operational proficiency, cargo claims prevention, customer service and safety.
