Accolades

The Boys and Girls Club of Worcester accepts a donation of $2,722.00 from the Ninety Nice Restaurant in Auburn. The money was raised through a silent auction of the restaurant∀ˆ™s decorative memorabilia after its recent renovation. The annual bike-a-thon has raised money for cancer research since 1980. This year∀ˆ™s event will take place August 4 and 5 with an estimated 4,800 participants. Alternatives of Whitinsville held a sneak preview and appreciation breakfast for donors at the site of its $9.2 million Whitin Mill renovation project. The event also launched the beginning of the community phase of their capital campaign, which has raised $3.5 million to date. The site will feature artisan, theater/training, gallery, restaurant and administrative spaces. In attendance were from left to right, Lee Gaudette, chairman of the Capital Campaign Community Phase committee, Kenneth Redding of Unibank, and Denise and Anthony Brookhouse of Koopman Lumber.
HealthAlliance hospital raised more than $150,000 at its 17th annual golf classic at The International golf club in Boston on August 6, 2007. The money will be used for HealthAlliance∀ˆ™s 2008 Healthcare Career Opportunity Fund scholarship program and the hospital∀ˆ™s emergency department. The Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts awarded eleven new grants totaling $120,000 to area nonprofits. For a second year, the foundation will fund the Summer Up program to decrease crime through academic and recreational youth programs in Fitchburg, Leominster and Gardner. Other nonprofits that serve healthcare, housing, and environmental concerns included The Community Health Center of Franklin, $19,000; United Neighbors of Cleghorn, $19,810; Leominster Land Trust, $7,750; The Fitchburg Historical Society, $7,750; Matson Community Services, $5,000; and North Quabbin Time Bank, $2,500.

Handworks Gallery of Acton was among the three Massachusetts retailers that won 2007 Top Retailer Awards from NICHE magazine. From about 600 nominated galleries, retail stores, arts nonprofits, museums and guilds, thirty-three retailers and owners were recognized at the August 5th event in partnership with the Philadelphia Buyers Market of American Craft. Awards were based on criteria in Niche’s Retailer Guide to Best Practices, including fair business and strengthening the American craft community. The other Massachusetts award winners were The Gifted Hand of Wellesley and Pinch Gallery of Northampton.  

The Worcester Regional Association of Realtors’ annual “Swing for Kids” golf tournament at Kettlebrook Country Club raised $12,000 for Baby’s Breath, Inc. and Rainbow Child Development Center. Founded by Dr. Theresa Rafferty, PhD, LICSW, Baby’s Breath, Inc. is working to alleviate multiple foster care placements, provide a stable environment and minimize the effects of attachment disorder in foster children. Rainbow Child Development Center, directed by Barbara Guthrie, is a licensed childcare agency that provides families educational and therapeutic services.
