Abby's House, a housing, shelter and advocacy group in downtown Worcester, will dedicate its new $16.2-million center Monday.
The agency's apartment complex for women on High Street has been expanded, given new windows and a new elevator system and made entirely handicapped-accessible, along with upgraded electrical, plumbing and heating systems.
The renovation of the roughly century-old building was helped by an $8.2-million tax-exempt bond from MassDevelopment. Another $2 million was raised in a capital campaign.
Abby's House will dedicate what has been known as its Women's Center as the Annette Rafferty Women’s Empowerment Center and Elaine’s Children’s Corner. Those names will honor the Abby's House founders, Annette Rafferty and Elaine Lamoureux.
The dedication is scheduled for Aug. 12.
The center, which opened its doors in 1986, provides a range of services for current and former shelter guests, including financial literacy, resume building, health and wellness, and access to a food pantry.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony for renovated residential center is planned for Sept. 4.
