AAA: This month will bring the highest gas prices of the year

March will likely bring Massachusetts’ most expensive gasoline prices in 2021, the travel association AAA Northeast predicted on Monday.

In its weekly report, AAA said gasoline prices in Massachusetts jumped 8 cents to $2.64 per gallon of regular unleaded, up from the previous week’ $2.56.

Compared to earlier averages, a month ago, the price was $2.39 per gallon, while the previous year it was $2.46, according to AAA.

As the season begins to transition into spring, AAA predicts the national gas prices to spike up to $2.80, and continue to increase at a 5- to 10-cent rate until refineries in Texas, which have been impacted by the state’s power outage, come back online.

“Barring hurricane season, March may bring the most expensive pump prices of 2021,” said Mary Maguire, AAA Northeast director of public and government affairs. “While the month is roaring in like a lion, by the end of it we could see some relief at the pump as refineries resume normal operations, especially if crude oil prices show signs of stability.”
