A123 Systems, a Waltham-based developer of lithium ion batteries, will supply battery packs to city busses under a new agreement with BAE Systems, a global provider of hybrid electronic technologies.
The new deal will expand the companies’ long-standing relationship, according to a statement by A123 Systems, which has operations in Westborough. Using lithium ion battery packs from A123, BAE Systems will power its HybriDrive Series propulsion system.
In addition to use on city buses, A123 battery packs will be used for other commercial applications owned by BAE, according to A123.
Battery packs featuring cylindrical cells designed by A123 are already in use on 3,000 buses that employ BAE’s systems around the world. But the newest design will feature the company’s prismatic cells, which satisfies BAE’s need for a more compact and economical solution, A123 said.
