A Tea Party For The 21st Century

As a small business owner, perhaps I’m expected to gripe about the government. Taxes. Regulations. Taxes. Fees. Taxes. More regulations. And even more taxes. The government has always given small business plenty to complain about, but there comes a time when responsible citizens have a duty to stand up and defend their freedoms.

That time is now.

Power Grab

Americans have been lulled into accepting government intrusion for decades. We let the government control what we eat, where we smoke, who we hire, and now we are letting them redistribute the fruits of our labor.

The previous administration used fear of terrorism to convince us to concede freedoms for the sake of safety. Now, Barack Obama is using similar fear tactics to scare Americans into surrendering more of their freedom and a larger share of their money to Washington.

Our government recently has decided to grab power and money like never before. Capitalism has been bloodied and bruised by an amazing shock and awe attack from Washington. Every day brings some new outrage. We don’t have time to fight one government action before another one comes at us. The offensive against capitalism is so fast that even some of the leaders in the fight are surprised by its speed and totality.

Washington is disrupting a process that always has allowed the best people and companies to thrive. Propping up weak banks and auto companies not only weakens those who should succeed, but in our now-upside-down world, the idea of failure no longer exists. We don’t need to punish failure, but we need to let its natural consequences occur for the free market to work.

As infuriating as the AIG bonuses were, those excesses pale in comparison with the outrageous spending orchestrated by our leaders. It is hypocritical for Congress and the president to sit in judgment of private business people when they are wasting trillions of dollars on bailouts and new, unnecessary programs.

The Tea Party movement began in February with spontaneous protests in 20 states. On April 15, more than 300 cities in all 50 states will rally against Washington’s power-and-money-grabbing. I am proud to say that Worcester will not sit and idly watch that day. Concerned, angry, frustrated, freedom loving citizens will gather in Lincoln Square to say, “We’re mad as hell and we’re not going to take it anymore!”

Follow in the footsteps of our forefathers by standing with us as we tell the tyrants that they’ve gone too far.

Ken Mandile is president of Swissturn/USA of Oxford and an organizer for the Worcester Tax Day Tea Party event on April 15 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Lincoln Square in Worcester
