This week, we’d also like to recognize the passing of two true Massachusetts pioneers, U.S. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy and Richard Egan, co-founder of Hopkinton-based data storage giant EMC Corp.
These two men were political opposites, the Democrat Kennedy known as the “liberal lion” of the Senate and Egan a lifelong, staunch Republican. But both knew the value of entrepreneurship and hard work in business. The kind of health care coverage Kennedy long advocated would relieve businesses of the extraordinary burden placed on them by health care costs.
The kind of aggression and opportunism Egan demonstrated as he built EMC from only a handful of employees to the 40,000-plus employee international computing powerhouse it is today now serves as a model for corporate leadership across industries.
They will be missed here and across the nation.
