ThermoEnergy Corp. of Worcester said it has signed a $900,000 contract to build a combustion system for Unity Power Allliance (UPA) that will test and optimize its technology for “clean coal” power generation.
The UPA, a joint venture of ThermoEnergy and ITEA SpA, of Italy, recently announced an initial-phase $1-million award from the U.S. Department of Energy to help fund the project under a special program that advances technologies for the efficient capture of “clean coal” power and carbon. After completion of the first phase, the alliance will aim for a second award in the range of $10 million to $20 million that would be applied toward construction of a pilot-scale plant.
Construction of the combustion system will begin late this year at ThermoEnergy’s manufacturing facility in Worcester, with completion expected in the first quarter of 2013.
