January saw 89 CEOs leave their positions, the fewest since last October, according to international outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.
CEO turnover in January was down 15 percent from December, when 105 chief executives left their posts, and down 23 percent lower than the 115 CEO departures recorded the same month a year ago.
Challenger said CEO turnover hit a record high of 1,484 in 2008 and slowed down in 2009 as companies sought stability. The firm said late 2009 could be "the calm before the turnover storm" if companies "seek leaders who are better suited for expansion."
In January, 24 CEOs retired from their posts. Another 20 resigned, 18 stepped down into other roles with the company and 10 took new positions in other companies.
Challenger tracks publicly announced CEO departures on a monthly basis.
