60,000 Use Nat. Grid Efficiency Programs

National Grid says its energy efficiency programs in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire saved enough electricity to power 31,000 homes for one year in 2007.

Using less electricity also helped reduce emissions from electricity production facilities. National Grid said 145,000 tons of carbon dioxide were saved as a result of the program. The English company said the carbon dioxide savings were equivalent to taking 18,129 cars off the road.

National Grid's U.S. headquarters are in Waltham.

The company said more than 60,000 customers participated in energy efficiency programs in 2007 in response to rising energy prices and fears about climate change.

The company has several energy efficiency incentive and assistance programs for business and residential customers.
