Some Tyco Fire Protection Products operations currently performed in Westminster will be relocated by September to other Tyco facilities in Brownsville, Texas, and Matamores, Mexico, the company said Monday.
The decision affects about 7 percent of Tyco’s overall Westminster workforce of more than 800, the statement said. Company spokesman Chris Woodcock said Tuesday 51 employees face layoffs and were notified Monday afternoon. Affected employees have the opportunity to apply for any open roles the company may have, he said.
"Westminster continues to be an important part of Tyco’s global fire and security operations, and a significant number of jobs have been added in other areas, most notably in centralized administrative functions to support local district offices throughout North America," Woodcock said. "There are now over 800 employees in Westminster, the size of the workforce has increased over the past year, and there is certainly a possibility that more jobs will be added in the future as Tyco continues its transition to a growth and innovation company."
The fire alarm product assembly and testing portion of Tyco Fire Protection Products are the functions being relocated to Texas and Mexico.
Westminster employees of the company perform an array of functions for Tyco Fire Protection Products, Tyco SimplexGrinnell and Tyco shared services. Other Tyco Fire Protection Products functions — including Application Engineering, Product Management and Technical Support — will remain in the Westminster administrative facility, the company said.
“The ongoing changes in Westminster are enabling Tyco to better serve its customers, improve operational efficiency, and advance its position as a technology and innovation leader," the company said.
Tyco said the change will help the company reduce transportation and storage costs, and strengthen distribution controls over the fire-alarm product line. The Brownsville and Matamoros facilities, which currently handle a percentage of the product lines being relocated, will be expanded in either size or production capabilities.
