400 layoffs spur $2.6M for retraining

Bose, which has locations such as at the Westborough Technology Park, reported 150 layoffs to the U.S. Department of Labor on April 6 of this year.
Following 400 employee layoffs from companies including Bose, EMC and Staples, the U.S. Department of Labor has approved a grant for just over $2.5 million to the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.
The $2,563,689 National Dislocated Worker Grant award will provide reemployment services to dislocated workers impacted by the layoffs from Bose, EMC, Staples and Gannett Publishing, according to a release from the U.S. Department of Labor. The layoffs were reported to the organization in April by Bose and EMC, with Gannett and Staples reporting the layoffs in Janurary.
The number of layoffs for each company, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, were:
- Bose: 150
- EMC: 11
- Gannett Publishing: 50
- Staples: 90
The National Dislocated Worker Grants temporarily expand the service capacity of dislocated worker training and employment programs at the state and local levels by providing funding assistance in response to large, unexpected economic events that cause significant job losses.
