$3M In Grants For Energy Innovation Projects

The federal Department of Energy has awarded three Central Massachusetts companies grants worth up to $1 million each to develop new energy technologies.

Marlborough-based Aspen Products Group Inc., Natick-based Capesym Inc. and Sturbridge-based Nova Scientific Inc. will receive grants, the DOE said.

"These businesses are helping to reduce our dependence on imported oil and protect our air and water, while ensuring that the United States leads in the clean energy race," Energy Secretary Steven Chu said in a statement.

Aspen is working to develop membranes that can more efficiently remove carbon dioxide from gas stream. Capesym is working on a new method of producing semiconductor material to detect radiation. And Nova is working on an imaging detector that could replace an existing device that relies on an isotope that is a limited resource.

The grants are part of $102 million awarded in 26 states this week under the DOE's small business innovation research (SBIR) and small business technology transfer (STRR) programs.
